The University of Macedonia of Economic and Social Sciences is the second and younger university of Thessaloniki, established in 1990. It currently maintains affiliations and is a member of more than 23 academic networks, such as EUA, IAU, CUM, EUCEN, THENUCE, ASECU, BSUN.
The Department of Balkan, Slavic and Oriental Studies is an inter-disciplinary department, founded in 1996, and welcomed its first students in September 1998. Since 1998, the department’s academic staff has implemented more than 20 European and/or national funded collaborative research projects. Professor E. Voutira, who is going to be the team leader on behalf of UoM, has a long experience in the field of humanitarian assistance as a member of the NOHA Network responsible for the writing of the EU modules of the European University Degree in International Humanitarian Assistance (1998). She has also collaborated with UNHCR for research on refugees in Greece. She is affiliated with numerous international NGOs in the field of humanitarian assistance (e.g. AMERA) and she is research fellow of the University of East London and an affiliate member of the Refugees Studies Centre, University of Oxford, UK.
