The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) maintains a webpage and publication with definitions of disaster-related terms. UNISDR has developed these basic definitions “to promote a common understanding on the subject for use by the public, authorities and practitioners”.

UNISDR’s mandate is to serve as the focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of disaster risk reduction.
