Palacký University in Olomouc was founded as early as in the 16th century and therefore it is the oldest university in Moravia and the second oldest in the Czech Republic. Nowadays it constitutes modern educational institution with a wide range of study programmes and rich scientific activity.
Since 2003 the Department of Christian Social Work, established at the Sts Cyril and Methodius Faculty, has been offering a bachelor study programme in international humanitarian and social work. Since 2010, the consequential Master’s study programme in that specialization is being offered. The programmes’ concept builds upon the basic belief that reconciliation and solidarity mobilization in local communities and societies are the basis of all effective aid in the course of foreign assistance after disasters, long-lasting conflicts and protracted crises. Recovery and development of these local and natural social sources at the level of communities and societies is then a presupposition of whole region development, according to our concept. In order to gain the knowledge along with the skills of intervention at this level, our programme combines the perspective of social work and Christian social tradition.
